Sept. 26 MLB Top Plays: Pirates ML Headlines Slate

A moneyline built on a age-defying reliever, a Rate Field shootout, and a Miami under nobody wants to bet — three A-grade plays for Saturday.

The Board

Three A-grade plays today, all sitting at 80 confidence, and they don't all point the same direction. One moneyline, two totals — one over, one under — which tells you this slate isn't a monolith. Start with the strongest number and work down.

Pirates moneyline (-109)

Kirby Yates carries a 2.95 FIP into Comerica Park. Justin Verlander carries an 8.41 FIP into the same building, on the same mound, in the same game. That gap is the whole story. The model puts Pittsburgh's win probability at 62%, and after regressing to the market that's a 5.8% edge at -109 — the largest of the three plays here.

The projected split is PIT 6, DET 4.4, a 10.4-run total against a market total of 9. That's a game the model expects to be higher-scoring than Vegas thinks, but the play isn't the over — it's the Pirates getting there faster and staying ahead. The run-environment read backs it up in a lopsided way: offense is neutral at 50, bullpen neutral at 44, park/weather neutral at 46, rest neutral at 50 — but pitching checks in suppressed at 33. Park score sits at 34, weather at 36, both unremarkable. When almost every component reads neutral and one comes in that far south, that's the signal doing the work. Detroit is sending a former ace out there in name only these days, and Pittsburgh's bullpen and lineup don't need much more than that to be favored.

Rockies-White Sox over 8 (-112)

Jose Quintana takes the ball for Colorado carrying a 5.63 FIP. Davis Martin counters for the White Sox at 3.62. On paper that reads like a pitcher's park for the home side, but the model isn't buying a low-scoring night at Rate Field — it projects 10.8 total runs against a market total of 8, split COL 4.6, CWS 6.2. That's a 5.6% total edge, with the over sitting at 68% probability against a 32% under.

The component board explains where the extra runs come from. Offense is neutral at 54, pitching neutral at 48, park/weather neutral at 47 — but bullpen grades out elevated at 70. Both relief corps are the soft spot here, not the rotations. Weather score comes in low at 25, which is worth flagging even though it didn't stop the model from leaning over — the park/weather composite itself still landed neutral at 47. Quintana's number and a shaky pen combination is enough to push this well past the posted total.

Braves-Marlins under 8.5 (-105)

Brent Suter starts for Atlanta with a 3.58 FIP. Jack Ralston starts for Miami at 5.73. Somehow this is the play going under, projected at 7.4 total runs against a market line of 8.5 — a 5.2% edge, split ATL 4, MIA 3.5, with the under sitting at 65% probability against a 35% over.

The bullpen component is what separates this from the other two totals: it grades out suppressed at 13, by far the lowest number on any board today. Everything else here is quietly neutral — offense 45, pitching 42, park/weather 43, rest 50 — and the park itself checks in modest, with a park score of 31 and a weather score of 35. loanDepot isn't juicing anything tonight, and the pens on both sides are the reason the model wants fewer runs than the number posted.

Closing Thought

Three A grades, three different shapes — a lopsided FIP gap driving a moneyline, a shaky bullpen inflating a total, and a suppressed bullpen doing the opposite. Same confidence level across the board. Different reasons to trust the number.
